How to read a prop firm payout policy in five minutes

A big profit split means nothing if the payout rules make it hard to withdraw. Before you buy a challenge, spend five minutes on the payout policy with this checklist.
1. Profit split
What share of profits do you keep: 80%, 90%, more? Check whether it starts at that level or scales up after a number of payouts. Some firms advertise their top split, which only applies after several withdrawals.
2. Time to first payout
How long after getting funded can you request your first withdrawal? Common ranges are 7, 14 or 30 days. Also check whether you need a minimum number of trading days first.
3. Payout frequency
After the first withdrawal, can you request one every week, every two weeks or once a month? Some firms let you choose on demand.
4. Minimum withdrawal amount
Many firms set a minimum, such as $50 or $100, or require profit above a buffer before you can withdraw.
5. Consistency rules
A consistency rule limits how much of your total profit can come from a single day, for example 30% or 40%. If one great day breaks the rule, you may need to keep trading before you can withdraw. This is one of the most common surprises at payout time.
6. What happens to the drawdown after a payout
At some firms, withdrawing profit lowers your balance but leaves the drawdown floor where it was, so you have less room after each payout. Look for the words “drawdown resets” or “balance after withdrawal”.
7. How you get paid
Bank transfer, crypto, or a payment platform? Check the fees and how long each method takes to reach you, especially if you trade from outside the US or Europe.
8. Refund of the challenge fee
Some firms refund your challenge fee with your first or fourth payout. It is a nice bonus, so note it when comparing firms.
